Secretary of State Jim Bennett will make a stop on the Photo Voter ID Mobile Unit tour in Birmingham this week in Irondale. The stop will take place at the Irondale Detective Building on Wednesday, May 7th from 9 AM to 12 PM. The mobile unit will be in Birmingham all week and end with a visit to the Hoover Public Library on Monday, May 12th. Another Mobile Unit is making visits to Baldwin and Mobile Counties this week.
"We have been very successful with our Birmingham visits so far," Bennett said. "We expect to see good turnout for these mobile unit sites throughout the week."
To date, the Secretary of State’s office has made over 1000 photo voter ID cards for voters who need them. The Alabama Department of Senior Services has also made approximately 1000 ID cards for senior citizens all over the state. The Photo ID Mobile Unit is approaching making the 90th stop on a tour around the state in an effort to reach more remote locations.
The photo voter ID law adopted by the state Legislature will take effect in the first statewide primary of 2014, which is June 3rd. A voter can always visit their local Board of Registrars office to receive a photo voter ID card during their weekly hours of operation. There is no cut-off date to receive a photo voter ID card; a voter may receive one up to and on Election Day. A voter can also receive a free non-driver ID for purposes of voting at any office that issues non-driver ID cards. A voter can use any of the following forms of photo ID at the polls starting June 3, 2014:
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License
- Valid Alabama Nondriver ID
- Valid Alabama Photo Voter ID card
- Valid State Issued ID (Alabama or any other state)
- Valid Federal issued ID
- Valid US passport
- Valid Employee ID from Federal Government, State of Alabama, County, Municipality, Board or other entity of this state
- Valid student or employee ID from a public or private college or university in the State of Alabama (including postgraduate technical or professional schools)
- Valid student or employee ID issued by a state institution of higher learning in any other state
- Valid Military ID
- Valid Tribal ID
If a voter possesses any of these forms of ID, they are not eligible to receive a free Alabama photo voter ID card. The voter must bring one of these photo IDs to the polls on Election Day or place a copy of the ID in absentee ballot materials. For more information on the process on how to receive a free voter ID, voters can call 1-800-274-VOTE or go to www.alabamavoterid.com. The Mobile, Baldwin, and Jefferson County Mobile Unit locations will also be listed on the website.
