Secretary of State Beth
Chapman announced today that after a long and prestigious career in state
government, Janice McDonald, Director of Elections, will retire at the end of
the month. She will be replaced by
current Supervisor of Voter Registration, Ed Packard.
Ms. McDonald has well over a
decade of experience within the elections division of the office of the
Secretary of State. She has also worked
in the Alabama Senate.
“Janice McDonald has been a
stalwart figure in Alabama elections for a long time and her absence from the
office will certainly be felt throughout the state. We all wish Janice well in her retirement and
we know that the office will be in great hands as we make the transition to Ed
Packard as Director of Elections,” Chapman said.
Mr. Packard has also been a
long time employee of the office of the Secretary of State and has been
committed to assisting elected officials, candidates, registrars and citizens
for over 15 years.
“I am honored to receive
this promotion to Director of Elections. We elections officials strive to
ensure that our elections are free, fair, and have integrity. I have long been committed to these goals and
I look forward to taking on this opportunity to continue my public service to
the people of the State of Alabama,” said Packard.
