U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville
President Barack Obama signed legislation today that aims to approve appliance energy efficiency standards.
The bill -- sponsored by U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville -- amends the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 by making corrections that aim to increase domestic competitiveness of appliance manufacturers by making them more energy efficient and innovative.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6582 on Dec. 4 with a vote of 398-2. Two days later, the Senate passed it with unanimous consent. When it passed the House, Aderholt issued a statement saying that the resolution is "a common sense solution to what never should have been a problem to begin with."
The bill makes changes to the 2007 act by updating clerical errors made and eliminating problems caused by errors, according to Aderholt's office. Corrections include updating the efficiency descriptions for covered water heaters, coordinating research and development of industry energy efficient technologies and establishing less stringent standards for over-the-counter commercial refrigerators.
"If we want to see economic growth in this country, it is critical that our nation's policy and laws create a regulatory environment that fosters innovation and job creation," according to Aderholt's statement from earlier this month. "Due to an increase in overreaching, burdensome and unnecessary regulations over the past few years, too many small businesses have had to layoff employees, reduce production or even shut their doors. This is precisely what happened to HH Technologies, an innovative manufacturing company in Cullman County, Alabama. The federal government's embrace of outdated technology prohibited a new and innovative solution to improved energy efficiency."
