Secretary of State Beth Chapman wants to remind voters that the deadline to register to vote in the November 6th General Election is Friday, October 26th. The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is November 1st.
"Exercising your right to vote is one of our most important rights that we possess as American citizens. If you are not registered to vote and are eligible, I encourage you to do so and be a part of the democratic process." Chapman said.
Chapman also said that voters should be aware of online voting registration sites that may mislead voters to think they can register online. Online registration is not an option in Alabama.
"The only ways to register to vote in Alabama are to use the correct mail-in registration form or to submit an application in person at your Board of Registrars office or other participating government agency. If you have any questions surrounding your registration please check with your local Board of Registrars to make sure your name is on the voter registration list." Chapman said.
While Alabama citizens can register to vote at their local board of registrars, under federal law they can also fill out and submit voter registration forms at all state and/or county offices that provide public assistance. In Alabama, public assistance offices, such as Medicaid, WIC, and DHR, must distribute voter registration forms, provide assistance in completing the forms if necessary, and accept such forms. These offices must then forward the forms to the local boards of registrars.
Alabamians can also fill out and submit a voter registration form when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license or when applying for a library card at any county library and many city libraries.
