Secretary of State Beth Chapman says Tropical Storm Isaac has caused some South Alabama cities to postpone their elections originally scheduled for tomorrow. Some cities have already announced their postponements.
Municipal elections are scheduled to occur across the state on Tuesday, August 28th. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Individuals can learn more about their polling locations by contacting their city clerk or Probate Judge’s Office.
Chapman said municipalities that may be affected by the storm are still working to decide whether their municipal elections will go forward in the face of the storm this week or be postponed for a later date. Governor Bentley’s State of Emergency declaration indicated there will be mandatory evacuations for some parts of the Gulf Coast and the City of Mobile.
"It is the local election officials who will make the decision of whether to postpone their cities’ elections or not. We stand ready to assist should there be any questions from those local officials." Chapman said.
Chapman explained that if any voter has a question, they should contact their local Probate Judge’s office, City Clerk or their city hall in order to find out if their elections have in fact been postponed and set for a future date. Any rescheduled election dates must be precleared by the U.S. Justice Department.
