Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries Unveils New Magazine
Comprehensive guide promotes agriculture to consumers, businesses and political leaders

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries today unveiled the premier issue of Alabama Agriculture magazine, a 72-page, comprehensive guide to the state's farms, food and forestry. The Department unveiled the magazine to the public today, in honor of National Ag Day.

The annual magazine serves as a primer for state legislators, business leaders and consumers about the impact of agriculture on the state's economy.

"Throughout 2011, farmers enjoyed some of the highest prices ever for the commodities they produce, including cotton, soybeans, corn, wheat, beef and poultry. We are one of America's largest producers of these commodities, thanks to Alabama's abundant resources of fresh water, fertile land and favorable climate," said John McMillan, Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries. "Alabama agriculture and agribusiness have a unique opportunity to meet a rapidly growing demand for food and fiber that will double in the next four decades."

The publication, which is free to the public, is also intended to educate Alabama consumers about their food source and give a voice to the state's farmers. The magazine features original photography, reader-friendly charts and graphs, and profiles of individual farmers. Articles focus on the state's main commodities - cotton, peanuts, catfish, beef and poultry - and other agriculture-based industries, such as forestry and agri-tourism, as well as innovations in technology and farm equipment.

The digital version of Alabama Agriculture magazine will be hosted at ALagriculture.com. The magazine's online presence features farm-to-table recipes, agriculture facts and stats, videos and interviews with farmers across the state.

Published by Journal Communications Inc., Alabama Agriculture is available at the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries office in Montgomery(1445 Federal Drive). A digital version is available online.
