MONTGOMERY—The Alabama Department of Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier
issued a statement Thursday, March 1, 2012, regarding the Tennessee Valley
Authority’s recent elimination of its police force.
Director Collier stated: “Obviously, there are a litany of
jurisdictional issues involved since TVA is a federal property in addition to
the supplementary pressure placed on local law enforcement and emergency
management to respond to calls for service.”
The Alabama Department of
Homeland Security is the primary state regulatory agency charged with the
responsibility for critical infrastructure protection.
“We are working with the local
law enforcement/emergency management officials and we are attempting to reach
out to TVA authorities in order to develop a solution that is mutually advantageous
to all parties involved. Our goal is to
avoid placing additional responsibility and an unfunded mandate on the local
law enforcement/emergency management officials as there is no available funding
to augment this emerging need. The
safety of the citizens of Alabama is always our highest priority.”
