HOMELAND SECURITY DIRECTOR REITERATES COMMITMENT TO IMMIGRATION LAW COMPLIANCE
MONTGOMERY –Alabama Department of Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier reiterated his support to the business community regarding the E-Verify program and the department’s commitment to facilitate compliance to Alabama’s Immigration Law.
The E-Verify requirement is not retroactive and only pertains to new hires.
Director Collier encouraged all businesses to utilize the resources that the United States Federal Government provides at www.uscis.gov/everify.
In compliance with Alabama’s immigration law, Alabama Department of Homeland Security also provides by access to the E-Verify service via the internet at http://immigration.alabama.gov or by calling 1-855-VERIFY-6, for businesses with 25 or fewer employees.
“We want the business community to be aware of these services because our agency wants to facilitate compliance with the law.”
All businesses must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN)—which is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, to use E-Verify. This number is used by the Internal Revenue Service to identify a business entity. This number can be obtained via the internet through an online application provided by the Internal Revenue Service at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97860,00.html or via telephone at (800) 829-4933. The hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. E.S.T, Monday through Friday.
E-Verify was operational on Dec. 1, but effective January 1, 2012, all businesses that conduct business with the state of Alabama or a political subdivision of the state were required to E-Verify all new employees.
