The Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition will unveil its 2011-2015 cancer control plan Jan. 20 at a meeting at the Bioethics Conference on Cancer Health Disparities Research at the Tuskegee University Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in Tuskegee.
“Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Alabama,” said Kathryn Chapman, Cancer Prevention Program director, Alabama Department of Public Health. “The coalition is dedicated to reducing the impact and burden of cancer in the state.”
The five-year plan includes fundamental lifestyle changes such as elimination of tobacco use, increased emphasis on physical activity and proper nutrition, participation in cancer screenings and vaccination, and appropriate and timely treatment.
Since its formation in 1988, the coalition has built a successful history of cancer control through an integrated approach. Members work together in assessing the state’s cancer concerns, identifying priorities, locating gaps in service and education, and allocating resources efficiently.
Cancer professionals such as oncologists, social workers, nurses and patient navigators; researchers; corporate, university and community leaders; as well as the public are invited to join or attend the coalition meeting. There is no membership fee to join the coalition.
The coalition will meet from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Jan. 20. For more information or to register, contact Scott Thomas at (334) 206-5558 or Bret Stanfield at (334) 206-5537.
