"Alabama Woman-Owned Business Builds for Success"
BIRMINGHAM, AL - It is sometimes difficult for a woman-owned business to find its place in a male-dominated industry. Shortly after starting Barlovento, LLC, Ms. Jane Solomon began looking for tools and opportunities to help grow her business. She contacted the Troy University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and received assistance, including access to government bid match information and training, and she continues to use the SBDC as a resource.
Under Ms. Solomon's leadership, Barlovento, LLC has expanded from a small specialty construction company to a growing design-build firm with a long past performance history of government jobs spanning from the Florida panhandle to South Carolina and throughout the South. Barlovento took advantage of the assistance provided by SBA through the 8(a) Business Development Program. When Barlovento graduated from the 8(a) program in 2008, they employed 89 and saw annual revenues climb to over $20 million.
In 2003 Barlovento was nominated for the U.S. Small Business Administration's Prime Contractor of the Year Award by one of their government customers, Eglin Air Force Base. After winning the state award, Barlovento rose to the top and was named U.S. Small Business Administration 2003 Prime Contractor of the Year in Washington. Jane Solomon and the Barlovento team are supporters of numerous civic and charitable organizations such as the Arts, Botanical Gardens, SEADAC, Landmark Park, The Child Advocacy Center and children's charities across Alabama and Florida.
