MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Mental Health announces the recent appointment of Dr. Timothy Stone to the position of medical director, effective September 1.
Stone has extensive experience in community-based services as well as inpatient services for individuals with mental illnesses, substance use disorders and intellectual disabilities. He has served with JBS Mental Health Authority in Birmingham as medical director for a number of years. Additionally, he has been a staff psychiatrist for Bradford Health Services and a member of the faculty at the UAB Department of Psychiatry. Stone's inpatient experience includes serving as chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Carraway Methodist Hospital and medical director of the Dual Disorders Psychiatric and Substance Abuse/Dependency Unit at Brookwood Medical Center.
Stone offers skill and expertise in communicating to consumers, families and professionals. He is dedicated to expanding the use of evidence-based practices throughout the state's mental health system, and fulfilling the department's goal of integrating services for persons with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Alabama Department of Mental Health Commissioner Zelia Baugh stated, "Dr. Stone will work directly with me as we offer the highest quality of service to Alabamians with mental illnesses, substance use disorders, intellectual disabilities and co-occurring disorders. His multi-disciplinary background will be invaluable as we move toward consolidating resources to better serve the overall behavioral healthcare needs of Alabama's citizens."
Stone holds a bachelor's in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Alabama. He earned a medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition to his medical license, Stone is board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is the District V representative on the American Association of Community Psychiatrists Board of Directors and is also a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, American Society of Addiction Medication, Alabama Psychiatric Association and the Medical Association of the state of Alabama. In addition to serving on a number of boards, councils and workgroups, Stone has served as a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association since 2007 and been recognized by Best Doctors in America since 2005. He has co-written several articles for national journals and two books on a variety of topics. Stone is also a sought after presenter throughout the state and nation.
