On August 13, 2004, Governor Bob Riley signed a proclamation declaring August 20, 2004, as Family preservation and Support Services Day. This honors the decade of caring provided to families through the programs Family Preservation and Support Services and highlights the important role that strong families play in Alabama’s future.
Celebrating ten years of dedicated service to Alabama families, Family Preservation and Support Services programs provide vital services through community-based wrap-around service centers and the intensive services of Family Options programs. Administered by the Alabama Department of Human Resources, Alabama had established 11 family centers, 12 family options programs, and a Healthy Families Program. Each program is carefully designed to meet the individualized needs of the families it serves and each focuses on strengthening families.
In addition to thousands of families receiving support services through these programs since inception, 16,192 Alabama families received services in fiscal year 2003 that helped them to pursue their goals, learn additional life skills, gain greater self-reliance, and nurture their children.
