We are all saddened that our own Louise Pittman died peacefully in her sleep last month. No one in Alabama is better known for their advocacy of children, or the Alabama Department of Human Resources for that matter, than Miss Pittman.
She retired from DHR in 1988 after a 50year career with the agency. Ms. Pittman received many awards in recognition of her tireless efforts on behalf of children. She was the first director of DHR's Family and Children's Services Division and she played a major role in the passage of a law requiring persons in certain occupations to report suspected child abuse and neglect.
After retiring, she remained an effective advocate for children and families through her work with various organizations.
The Department is planning a memorial celebration honoring Miss Pittman and her incalculable contribution to Alabama’s children and their welfare throughout her life and distinguished career. Celebration details will be coming at a later date.
