The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a plan that permits some hurricane victims who are currently receiving food stamps to receive additional food stamps for the month of September, the state Department of Human Resources (DHR) announced today.
The plan is authorized for the following counties: Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Greene, Hale, Pickens, Mobile, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, and Washington.
Under the Supplemental Food Assistance Program, current food stamp recipients who have not already received the maximum benefit will receive an additional amount that will give them the maximum monthly benefit allowed for their household size.
"What we’re try to do here is to help relieve some of the financial burden that hurricane victims have endured over the past few weeks. Hopefully, this additional benefit will aid them in providing healthy and nutritious meals for their families", state Department of Human Resources Commissioner Page Walley explained.
The supplement will be automatically added to recipient’s Electronic Benefit (EBT) Card.
