Governor Bob Riley is appointing Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos, a former Commissioner of the Department of Human Resources, to serve on the DHR State Board.
"There's not a person in Alabama who is more qualified to serve on the DHR board than Mayor Petelos," said Governor Riley. "He has a long history of service to the people of our state and he did an excellent job as DHR commissioner under two different administrations. I'm proud to appoint Mayor Petelos to this important position."
The board is charged with overseeing DHR. Mayor Petelos is appointed to the seat currently held by Pam Baker, whose term expired in November.
"I am looking forward to working with fellow board members on the important issues facing DHR," Mayor Petelos said.
Mayor Petelos is a native of Birmingham and a graduate of the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1986 and served until 1997. That year, he was appointed Commissioner of the Department of Human Resources by Governor Fob James.
In September 2004, Petelos was elected by the citizens of Hoover as Mayor.
Mayor Petelos is married to Judge Teresa Petelos, the Presiding Judge of the Circuit Court of Jefferson County, Bessemer Division. They have two daughters.
