Alabama Forestry Commission Elects New Officers

     As dictated by state law, new officers were elected at the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) Board of Commissioners meeting held on January 20 at the state forestry headquarters in Montgomery. The Board elected Kenneth Real of Detroit, Alabama as the new Chair, and Johnny McReynolds of Russellville was re-elected as Vice-Chair. Real has served on the Commission since March 2006, and McReynolds since November 2008.

    Real, a registered forester in both Alabama and Mississippi, is a 1977 graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. With a total of 33 years of forestry experience, he is the president and owner of Realwood, Inc. which he started in 1993. He was procurement manager for Hankins Wilson Lumber Company in Houston, Alabama from 1983 to 1993. Prior to that, he was procurement forester for Tennessee River Pulp and Paper Company in Ackerman, Mississippi. Real serves on the Alabama Farmers Federation State Forestry Committee and also serves as president of the Marion County Farmers Federation. He is a member of the Alabama Forestry Association.

     McReynolds is a registered forester in Alabama and Mississippi. He is currently vice president of Homan Industries where he has been employed for the last 23 years. Previously, he served as president and forestry consultant of Woodlands Managers, Inc. in Russellville. From 1971 through 1985, he was employed as procurement manager with Champion International in Courtland, Alabama. McReynolds earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Economics from Mississippi State University in 1968, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management in 1971.

    Other members of the AFC Board of Commissioners are immediate past Chairman Don Heath of Hoover; Jett Freeman of Spanish Fort; Randy Gilmore of McCalla; Melisa Love of Opelika; and Jerry Smith of Vernon, Alabama. The seven-member board, appointed by the Governor and approved by the State Senate, is responsible for setting policy for the Commission, the state agency charged with protecting and sustaining Alabama‚Äôs forest resources.
