The Alabama Department of Public Health is presenting a three-part summer series of satellite programs on cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness for the education of health care providers, social workers, and staff that treat patients in community clinics, public health departments, medical and dental facilities.

Elana Parker, Health Equities program manager with ADPH, said, “The primary objective is to address different minority populations based on cultural and social determinants. Both significantly impact upon their seeking healthcare. The ultimate goal is to eliminate barriers that prevent people from coming in for services.”

The series covers diversity in minority populations which include currently incarcerated and newly released prisoners, persons with gay and lesbian lifestyles, and members of Native American Indian, Asian, Hispanic and Latino communities.

The second satellite program in the series will be conducted on July 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. and the third is slated for Aug. 18, also from 2 to 4 p.m.
