MONTGOMERY, Ala- Secretary of
State Beth Chapman has declared the test run of the election night reporting
(ENR) system to be a great success. The program was tested in Alabama’s
four largest counties: Jefferson, Madison, Mobile and Montgomery. These
four counties represent approximately one-third of Alabama’s voting
population. The system will now be used statewide for the general election
in November.
The ENR system takes vote totals
directly from each county and displays them in a usable format on the
internet. Once the results are posted to the web, they will be displayed
using maps and graphics to show vote totals, percentages and other important information
to the public. The system is part of Chapman’s initiative to bring the
Secretary of State’s office into the 21st century by using new
technology to better serve the citizens of Alabama.
“This is a new and innovative
service we are excited to provide to the citizens of Alabama. Last night’s test
was a giant step forward for Alabama elections. We will continue to promote
fair and honest elections statewide through every means available, including
new technology,” said Chapman.
