"As of today, based on an unofficial count, the two candidates in the
Republican Primary Runoff scheduled for July 13, 2010 are Bradley Byrne
and Robert Bentley with Tim James in a close third place," Secretary
Chapman says.
"My goal as Secretary of state always has been and always will be
FAIR and HONEST elections in Alabama."
"There will not be an automatic recount triggered by the close
numbers between the two candidates, as Alabama law does not require it
in Primary Elections."
"This office cannot certify the total votes cast and counted until
June 11th at the earliest and June 17th at the latest."
"At this point in time, no one has asked for a recount. We will
cross that bridge if we get to it," Chapman said, "but my staff and I
are more than prepared to handle whatever comes our way."
"We are setting a precedent for something that is unprecedented.
This is a historic election result in Alabama’s history."
"I predicted that the race for the runoff would be so close,
within ‘hundreds’ of votes, so I wouldn’t even tell my own mother who I
was casting my vote for Governor so I would not only BE fair and
objective, but so that I could appear fair and objective when this
situation occurred. All candidates will be treated equally by this
office."
