MONTGOMERY
- Secretary of State Beth Chapman would like to encourage all Alabamians to
stop and pay close attention to their health on Tuesday, March 23rd
during American Diabetes Association Alert Day. One in five Americans is at
risk for type 2 diabetes. Nearly 6 million more have diabetes and don't know
it.
“As the Secretary of State, I am
interested in what is best for Alabama and Alabamians,” stated Ms. Chapman, “diabetes
runs in my family and I was diagnosed four years ago and have a genuine concern
to help educate and inform others about the symptoms and risks involved.”
Alabama leads the nation in diabetes
with more than 440,000 citizens diagnosed with the disease. The growth rate for
new cases is 30 percent above the national average. It is estimated that
diabetes is costing Alabama businesses more than $3 billion annually according
to an impact statement from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service.
Secretary
Chapman joins with the Alabama Diabetes Association to ask every Alabamian to
please – take the first step toward stopping diabetes and take the Diabetes Risk Test
now – then share it with your loved ones to let them know you care about their
health.
