MONTGOMERY,
AL - Secretary of State Beth Chapman is encouraging all Alabamians to shop with
local businesses during this holiday season.
With
about two weeks remaining until Christmas, research predicts a nationwide
downturn in the amount each family will spend on gifts this holiday
season. According to the American
Research Group, shoppers plan to spend on average only $417 this year, which is
the lowest spending level since 1990.
“As
Alabamians, we need to support Alabama businesses to ensure that our money
stays at home,” Chapman said. “In these tough
economic times, we need to do the most we can to make sure our local businesses
are successful. The more successful these
businesses are now, the stronger our communities are in the future.”
There
are nearly 425,000 active corporations in Alabama. Each of them is required to file information
with the Office of the Secretary of State in order to conduct business in the
