MONTGOMERY
– Secretary of State Beth Chapman continues to increase access for the public
by improving the functionality of the Open Meetings Act website.
The
Open Meetings Act provides the public with greater access to state and local
government. This law guarantees that Alabama's citizens have open access to
agencies, boards, commissions, and other governmental bodies which conduct the
people's business.
The
Secretary of State’s office, since going online with the Open Meetings Act
website in 2005, has registered more than 550 public organizations, and
hundreds of individuals who have registered to receive notifications concerning
meeting times and dates.
The
new improvements to the site allow more transparency, and are more
user-friendly for the general public, registered individuals requesting email
notifications for meeting public information, and for the governmental bodies
who post their meetings. The Open Meetings Act website now offers the following
improvements:
--Registering to receive notifications is
easier
--Finding specific organizations is now
faster, and the listing is now searchable
--The Open Meetings Act, enacted in 2005, is
now on the website
--The HELP Menus have been expanded and
improved
--Navigation of results is easier with page
numbers at the bottom of each page
“My
staff and I are proud to offer these improvements in the processes of how the
Secretary of State’s Office operates for Alabama,” stated Secretary Chapman,
“the Open Meetings Act website is yet one more way that we provide transparency
in our effort to be more efficient and effective.”
