Pedorthics (POP) Providers
RE: Alabama
Medicaid DME and POP Provider Enrollment Requirements
The Alabama Medicaid Agency
(Medicaid) has been notified that the Alabama State Board of Prosthetists and
Orthotists (the Board) will cease all operations effective October 1, 2026. The
Board stopped approving new licenses on July 1, 2026. All licensing, compliance and administrative
duties currently overseen by the Board will conclude on September 30, 2026.
Effective October 1, 2026,
Medicaid will no longer require providers to hold a state license issued by the
Board as a condition of enrollment. Instead, all providers must be enrolled
with Medicare and maintain Medicare accreditation and certification. Medicare
enrollment, accreditation and certification will be required for both Medicaid
enrollment and revalidation. Providers will be enrolled according to the
specialty assigned to them in the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain and
Ownership System (PECOS).
Providers previously
licensed by the Board who wish to enroll with Medicaid between July 1, 2026 and
October 1, 2026 should contact the Medicaid DME Program at (334) 242-5050.
The Provider Billing Manual will be updated
with the new Medicaid enrollment criteria with the October 2026 quarterly
update. Policy questions concerning this ALERT should be directed to the DME
Program at (334) 242-5050.
