MONTGOMERY,
ALA – On June 4, the Alabama State Council on the Arts awarded $517,900 in
CARES funding at its quarterly meeting in Montgomery. The $457,900 in federal
Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) funding from the
National Endowment for the Arts was combined with $60,000 from South Arts, a
regional 9-state arts organization to aid the
arts industry recovery effort in Alabama.
Support is critical as
arts organizations reemerge as vibrant parts of the Alabama’s creative economy.
Artists and arts organizations are an integral part of communities and increase
the quality of life for all citizens. Arts organizations are also economic
drivers, bringing tourism revenue to communities and providing thousands of
jobs statewide. These CARES grants will aid small, medium, and large arts
organizations as they sustain operations and retain jobs through these
difficult times. The grants must be used to support salaries and independent
contractor costs as well as costs essential to organizational operations such
as rent and utilities.
As a result of
receiving the CARES stimulus funding from the National Endowment for the Arts
and South Arts, the Alabama State Council on the Arts created a special grant
application for organizations in which they could apply for funding as part of
the Alabama CARES About the Arts: Emergency Relief Grants program.
Applications were evaluated based on financial and employment impact and
narrative descriptions. The need for arts support in the state far exceeded the
availability of CARES funding currently available, but the Council is grateful
to be able to help 80 arts organizations throughout Alabama through this
program.

The staff of the
Council, directed by Dr. Elliot Knight, administers the grants programs,
produces arts events, and provides technical assistance in arts planning and
implementation. The Council receives funding through an annual appropriation
from the Alabama Legislature and funding from the National Endowment for the
Arts, a federal agency.
