TO: All Providers
Starting April 2018, the federal government will issue new Medicare identification cards that do not use Social Security Number-based Health Insurance Claim numbers in order to provide greater security and privacy for beneficiaries. Individuals will instead receive a card with a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) that will be used for all Medicare transactions such as billing, eligibility status and claim status. This change will not affect Medicare benefits and eligibility status.
To assist providers, advocates and others who work with Medicare beneficiaries in making a smooth transition to the new system, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will host a free online presentation on Thursday, November 9 from 1 to 2 pm (Central Standard Time).
The presentation will include a discussion on:
•Information on the new system •Format for the new Medicare number •Timeline and milestones for implementation, including the transition period •Beneficiary outreach and education •How to get ready for the new number
Who should participate?
