MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Secretary of State Beth Chapman will hold an Alabama Military and Overseas Voting Task Force Meeting on Monday, December 15, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Old Archives Room of the State Capitol. Pat Hollarn, Supervisor of Elections for Okaloosa County, Fla., will be the guest presenter.
Okaloosa County recently completed a successful and binding secure internet voting pilot with military bases overseas. The pilot and its results prove the soundness and feasibility of internet voting.
Secretary Chapman announced, “Alabama is fortunate to partner with Pat Hollarn, a long time elections expert, as our state continues to work towards more accessible and effective methods to allow our military men and women and those who are overseas to vote. Hearing about her successful pilot program initiatives will be very useful as Alabama strives toward secure internet voting for our soldiers and citizens overseas.”
Chapman and her staff have met with Ms. Hollarn prior to this meeting in order to see the results of the pilot and research and discuss the opportunities that might be in store for Alabama.
The Alabama Military and Overseas Task Force will also discuss plans to be presented for the 2009 legislative agenda. Secretary Chapman expressed the importance of support from the legislature in this initiative and her hope that a plan will be put in place by the end of the session this year.
