MONTGOMERY – Secretary
of State John Merrill confirmed that Vermont Senator and Democratic
presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will make an appearance in Birmingham,
Ala.
On Monday, January 18, Senator Sanders is scheduled to appear at
the Historic Boutwell Memorial Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the
program beginning at 7 p.m. The link to access free tickets can be found here: https://go.berniesanders.com/page/event/detail/rally/4rfyp.
The Secretary of State commented on Senator Sanders’ visit to
Alabama: “We are excited to have Senator Sanders make a campaign stop in Alabama,
and we want to welcome him to our great state! I am thrilled with how the SEC
Primary has developed and what it means for our people to have personal
interaction with these candidates. With the Iowa caucus being less than three
weeks away, it is a very exciting time for our people to have the opportunity
to speak with presidential candidates. Thanks to the assistance and full
support of the Alabama Legislature, one of the most significant things we have
done in the Secretary of State’s Office is change the primary date to March 1.
Since the March primary legislation passed, the Democratic frontrunner and
eight of the top Republican candidates have made campaign stops in Alabama,
which is unheard of for our state. As Secretary of State, I will continue to
position Alabama and the South as a place where Presidential candidates are
willing to make an effort to visit and meet our remarkable people.”
Alabama recently saw visits from former Florida Governor Jeb Bush,
Dr. Ben Carson, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Ted Cruz,
former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Ohio Governor John Kasich, Senator Rand
Paul, Senator Marco Rubio, Donald Trump and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
For more information on meeting the candidates, please contact the
Office of the Secretary of State at 334-242-7200.
This communication is not an endorsement of any particular
candidate or political party but an effort to encourage voter participation and
registration, as well as participation in the SEC Primary, which will be held on
March 1, 2016.
